Educational Modules

College of Human Sciences Teaching Initiative

Through the Grants for Innovative Teaching Initiatives researchers Jennifer Margrett (Human Development and Family Studies), Sarah Francis (Food Science and Human Nutrition), Warren Franke (Kinesiology), Young-A Lee (Apparel, Events & Hospitality Mgmt), Denise Schmidt-Crawford (School of Education) and Robyn Christensen (Human Development and Family Studies) were able to produce online learning modules for students to learn more about aging. Knowing the aging population is diverse and complex these modules were created to address a diverse array of aging related topics:

  • Demographics of Aging
  • Biology of Aging
  • Psychological Aspects of Aging
  • Society, Finances, Healthcare & Policy
  • Degrees & Careers in Gerontology
  • Technology & Environments
  • Nutrition & Physical Activity

Module Information

Each module takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, but students are able to pause or rewind to take more time reading and exploring the modules. Using a program called Adobe Captivate, each module was specially designed to address a common topic related to aging. A survey of Iowa State undergraduate students revealed their desire to learn more about the topics listed above.
